Monterey fire chief, treasurer arrested
SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Schuyler County fire chief and his wife are accused of embezzling more than $100,000 from their volunteer fire department.
State Police say Monterey Fire Chief Larry States and his wife, Kimberly, who served as department treasurer, misappropriated more than $100,000 of department funds over five years.
An investigation by the Comptroller's office discovered that the couple used the money to help pay for their home mortgage, cell phones, groceries, concert tickets, family vacations and a personal vehicle.
Both Kimberly and Larry were arrested Friday.
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has also requested that an investigation be conducted at the Schuyler County Sheriff's Department, where Larry States serves as a sergeant and jail administrator.
