YORKVILLE, N.Y. -- One five-year-old is giving up something even some adults wouldn't be able to sacrifice: Gifts on her birthday.

This year, Eliana and her parents decided to give instead of receive. Party guests were asked to bring non-perishable items instead of gifts to donate to Utica's Feed Our Vets Program.

Eliana's parents say it's a lesson in giving that you're never too young to learn.

"Because it's nice and I don't want the people going to bed hungry, so we're giving them food," Eliana said.

"I think it's a good lesson for them to learn that there's other people out there that don't have everything they have," said Eliana’s mother, Alice Convertino.

Officials from Feed Our Vets say with the donations, they expect to be able to provide a week’s worth of food for at least 35 veterans.
