WEBB, N.Y. -- A snowmobile crash in Herkimer County killed a Long Island man early Saturday morning. It happened on Carter Road in the town of Webb just after 3:30 a.m.

Police say Gregory Hauff, 44, of West Babylon was riding at a high rate of speed when he missed a trail entrance. His snowmobile hit a snow embankment and went airborne, into a tree. Hauff was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say a lack of experience, combined with the speed, contributed to the crash.
