ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A big turnout Thursday night as Elmira residents voiced their concerns about New York's new gun legislation.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s office held the last of two informational meetings on the topic. The meeting was intended to enlighten gun owners by answering some of the most commonly asked questions, including which types of guns are considered illegal.

Under the law, semi-automatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and one military style feature will be banned.

Sheriff Christopher Moss says while there are some good parts to the law, he believes other parts are unconstitutional.

“They can feel confident knowing their local county sheriff feels as though their rights have been infringed upon. Hopefully they walk out of here knowing what’s legal and illegal and they can contact us to find out. Hopefully Albany will see how busy these meetings have been and how important this issue is to gun owners,” Sheriff Moss said.

Owners of assault weapons have until April 15, 2014 to register their assault weapons.
