UTICA, N.Y. -- The Utica Fire Department has released new information as the investigation progresses into last week's deadly fire on Columbia Street.

Seven people lived in the building. All made it out safely with the exception of Jeffrey Howarth, 50, who suffered severe burns and later died from his injuries.

Investigators say the fire started in the second floor room where Howarth was staying. They haven't pinpointed the cause, but say the fire caused other combustible material in the room to ignite, spreading the flames quickly.

Firefighters were able to save the building next door, which is only nine inches away.
