JOHNSON CITY, NY -- The annual Pinewood Derby, a Boy Scout tradition, took over part of Oakdale Mall in Johnson City.

Broome and Tioga County scouts set up booths and displays to showcase what they’ve been working on. Cub Scouts and Webelos got to face off with handmade wooden cars. Runoff had kids racing their best designs. Those who participated in the event will receive a special badge, made by one lucky Boy Scout.

Troop 100 Boy Scout, Gavin Hlavac says, "Usually they don't let kids make and it's usually just the Cub Scout people in charge of it, that design it. So this year was cool, because it was the first year they had the kids design it; and I got picked so it was cool."

The Hiawatha District will host its Winter Camporee from February 22 through February 24 at Tuscarora Scout Reservation in Gulf Summit.
