FORT DRUM, N.Y. – It was a party on Fort Drum Monday as the USO celebrated its 72nd birthday.

The United Services Organizations is a combination of several different agencies that wanted to find ways to honor the troops during World War II. Since then, the USO has been going strong and on Fort Drum, it's busy.

On post in the North Country, the USO served more than 100,000 people last year. Not only does it host a place for soldiers to spend downtime, but also big events and holidays. It also meets every single plane of soldiers that comes home from a deployment and the staff is all volunteer.

"You know, less than one percent of our nation serves in uniform. That means the other 99 percent has an obligation to support them. Thankfully, the people do have done it for 70 plus years," said Karen Clark, USO Fort Drum Director.

Clark says the USO survives on volunteers and donations.
