SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Upstate Cancer Center is still about a year from completion, but the project has reached a significant milestone.

The final steel beam that will be used to build the center, arrived at Upstate University Hospital Tuesday morning. The 23 foot, 600 pound beam was brought into the hospital lobby where it was signed by numerous people affected by cancer.

The signed beam will be put into place next month.

"This is a facility that is actually built around the heart of the patient, even beyond the technology. So, while this is going to clearly be something we've never seen in this region, more importantly it is going to provide a breadth of services that lead with your heart and caring of the entire family," said Dr. David Smith, Upstate Medical University President.

The cancer center will serve patients from throughout New York, Pennsylvania, and even Canada.
