CENTRAL NEW YORK -- For the fifth year, walkers hit the streets of four cities around the region to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness.

Hundreds of people signed up for "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" events in Syracuse, Binghamton, Ithaca and Auburn Saturday morning. The walk is sponsored by the Rescue Mission.

With the recent cold and snow, organizers say the mission has been exceeding capacity. The need for its services continues to grow.

Alan Thornton, Rescue Mission CEO, said, "Whether it's a meal in our food service center, where last year we served over 250,000 meals to those in need, or whether it's coming in to an emergency shelter, ultimately our goal is to end hunger and homelessness. We want to see people move out of homelessness and into affordable, permanent housing."

So far, the walk has raised more than $30,000 for the Rescue Mission.
