SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The common council vote was part of the latest political spat between lawmakers and Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner. She says there is a legal reality to the situation that requires the unmarked cars to be approved.

In a statement, Miner said that, "The Council has once again shown its unwillingness to thoroughly understand the complicated issues facing the city."

"It's not the way to govern. There's a good way to do it and there's a sloppy way. This certainly looks to be a sloppy way," Mayoral Chief of Staff William Ryan said.

"For the mayor to issue this kind of an attack on the council as a legislative body that has a job to do, is in the words of one of my colleagues, rude, insulting and inaccurate,” said Syracuse Common Councilor At-Large Lance Denno.

In Miner's statement, she also criticized the council's handling of the background check legislation and the planning commission legislation.
