SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- In an effort to save lives and end violence, Syracuse University joined the One Billion Rising movement.

SU Rising was held Valentine's Day to raise awareness of gender violence and to remember victims and survivors of domestic abuse. The event featured a performance ceremony and candlelight vigil.

It is estimated that one in five women in America have been affected by sexual harassment, rape and violence.

An event organizer says that sexual violence is a problem on the SU campus and action needs to be taken to stop and prevent the abuse.

"One of the concerns is to be able to provide safe havens as well as appropriate legal sanctions for particularly men who commit this kind of violence," event organizer Susan Wadley said.

The One Billion Rising event is a nationwide movement designed to draw attention to the continuing violence. For more information and to become part of the action, visit onebillionrising.org.
