ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Holland Patent Superintendent has responded to criticism over her decision to keep schools open Tuesday, while several other school districts in the area closed due to weather conditions.

Kathleen Davis says the school district followed the same procedures they always do when deciding to call a snow day and they believed the weather conditions were typical for winter in the area. She says 11 surrounding schools remained open Tuesday.

Most of the concerns from parents came after two students got into a car accident on their way to school that morning.

Anusha Yagey, 16, died at the hospital from his injuries in the crash. His brother, Joseph Yagey, 17, was driving when he slid out of control and hit a truck. Joseph is expected to be okay.

Davis says this was a terrible tragedy for the school district. She said, "My heart is heavy with grief. This tragedy has affected me in many ways. Anusha was a wonderful child who I had the great opportunity to work with over the years to ensure his transition to our country and the school district."
