SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Patients at Crouse Hospital will soon have a new tool on their side in the fight against breast cancer.

The digital breast tomosynthesis system will allow doctors to examine very detailed images of the breast. They can examine layers of tissue in one millimeter sections.

Officials with Crouse's Breast Imaging Center said that studies show tomosynthesis led to a 40 percent increase in detection of small, invasive cancers. That's a crucial step in fighting the disease.

Director of Breast Imaging Stephen Montgomery said, "I believe, at this time, that this is going to revolutionize breast screening. And, I believe strongly that this technology will proliferate and that this will become, in the near future, the screening study of choice."

Officials expect to begin using the system next month.
