BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- We continue to follow a Broome County family working to get back their home.
Volodymyr Kurylo offered to pay all back taxes on his sister and disabled brother's home on Arthur Street in Binghamton back in December in order to prevent the home from going to auction.
After a long debate, the County Legislature recently approved a new policy which allows the Director of Real Property Services to consider a sellback based on certain criteria. The director is now proposing to sell back the Kurylo's property, and three others.
Lawmakers will vote on it Thursday night. The Kurylo family is hoping to see the resolution approved, but it also wants the last two months of rent payments to be credited against the back taxes due.
"Ideally, before Thursday, Broome County Attorney Behnke and Director Kevin Keough will relent, they will use some common sense and logic and say, yeah maybe, that rent should be credited against the back taxes, that's the ideal situation," said Volodymyr Kurylo.
The County Attorney says any rent collected goes to offset management costs so taxpayers don't have to pay for delinquent properties.
