SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. -- The flood gauges that monitor streams and rivers in the Susquehanna River Basin will remain online through the spring.
The U.S. Geological Survey had threatened to shut the gauges off March 1st if funding wasn't secured in time, but under pressure from Senator Charles Schumer, they have extended the deadline to June 1st.
The tool is used by the National Weather Service to provide flood forecasting and warning information ahead of potential natural disasters.
Schumer says he is working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to provide $215,000 needed through the Sandy Supplemental bill.
All sides say they expect the money to come through.
