SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- On the ten year anniversary of his arrest, there is still strong support for Dr. Rafil Dhafir. Dhafir was the Manlius oncologist accused of funneling money to the Middle East using a fake charity.

Dhafir is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence, convicted of money laundering and conspiracy to violate U.S. sanctions, among other charges.

On Tuesday, Dhafir supporters held a vigil in front the Federal Building in Syracuse. They say the government made it difficult for him to present his arguments and get a fair trial. They also talked about the state of Muslim charities in the United States, and their role in this case.

"When I was attending the trial, I realized very quickly that Muslim charity was one of the biggest targets of the U.S. government in the post-9/11 period. Many principles were sent to jail for long periods of time," said Katherine Hughes, a Dhafir supporter.
