FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- Kansas, Kuwait and Iraq are just some of the places this 48-star flag has flown in honor of Private First Class Joseph A'Hearn, who was killed in the battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.

Wednesday evening, the flag was flown over the 10th Mountain Division Headquarters on Fort Drum and presented to his grandson, Lieutenant Colonel Chris Moretti.

Moretti say he's been flying the flag on the anniversary of his grandfather’s death since February of 2004.

"We reflect upon his service and over the years, we have expanded that on not just his service, but all of the veterans that come before us and just to recognize that we will never forget the ultimate sacrifice that they paid for our freedom," Moretti said.

Lieutenant Colonel Moretti says in the future, he hopes to pass on the flag to his son so he can continue to honor those who served our country.
