SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Notre Dame girls basketball team was always much better than its No. 7 seed indicated and the Lady Jugglers proved it on Thursday by beating previously-unbeaten and top-seeded perennial power South Jefferson 54-45 in overtime to win the Section III, Class B championship at the Carrier Dome.
South Jefferson was bidding for its ninth title in 11 years and seemed to have the momentum after tying the game with a late 3-pointer to force overtime, but Notre Dame refused to be rattled and outscored the Lady Spartans 11-2 in the extra period. Eight of those points came from leading scorer Emily Durr who only had seven in regulation due to foul trouble. She was named the Class B Tournament Most Valuable Player.
The sectional championship is Notre Dame's second in four years.
