SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Destiny USA was awarded for its green initiatives during the past year. OCRRA gave the mall the Recycler of the Year Award for 2012 during a celebration Friday morning.

Destiny didn't just get the award for simply recycling paper and plastic. It's being recognized for recycling compost waste rather than dumping everything in a landfill.

Mall officials say it wasn't just them making this commitment to recycling compost ,it's the restaurants and food vendors that are really making it happen.

"Most of the tenants we found are happy to do it. And really, it's taken a commitment from OCRRA and from us to make it as easy as possible them. If you make it difficult, then obviously it's harder to do it, but if you give them all the tools they need, most of them are happy to do it and they really want to do it," said Brandon Munger, Director of Operations at Destiny USA.

Munger says in 2012, Destiny diverted 39 percent of waste from the landfill to recycling and their goal for this year is to divert 50 percent.
