UTICA, N.Y. -- A Utica Police canine is to thank for stopping what could have been a dangerous situation for officers.

Police said, on Friday night officers stopped a man in the area of Schuyler Street for walking in the roadway.

They said the suspect resisted arrest, and while struggling to take him into custody an officer announced he believed the suspect had a gun.

That's when Rex was released to go after the suspect, Rashiem Love, 32. The dog knocked him to the ground and helped the officers handcuff the suspect.

Love is facing three counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of resisting arrest.
