TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Three Cornell University fraternities have been suspended due to reports of hazing.

Sigma Nu and Delta Phi fraternities have been placed on interim suspension by their national headquarters and Cornell after the school received what they call credible allegations of serious physical hazing.

The Chi Psi fraternity was suspended by its national headquarters after also receiving reports of serious hazing by its Cornell chapter.

The interim suspensions mean the chapters can not engage in any activities on campus other than the operation of its residence.

The three fraternities must remain on interim suspension until the allegations are resolved through the appropriate university judicial bodies.

University administrators said that increased awareness of what constitutes hazing, and the reporting of hazing incidents, is helping the university keep students safe.
