Attorney General’s office files lawsuit against contraband cigarettes

NEW YORK STATE -- The New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office continues to crack down on what it calls contraband cigarettes.

The Attorney General’s office is filing a lawsuit against an Indian cigarette distributor in Canada and the company that makes Seneca brand cigarettes. As part of the investigation, ATF agents seized three million Seneca brand cigarettes from the Skydance smoke shop in Seneca Falls.

There is also an ongoing lawsuit against the King Mountain Tobacco Company. Both brands are distributed throughout Central New York reservations as well.

The state claims the companies are evading taxes while Native American owners claim the cigarettes were made on sovereign land.
