Rules that have been in effect for years banning certain items from being brought onto airplanes are changing next month. Lori Chung has more on these changes.

UNITED STATES -- After narrowing their list of things air travelers are forbidden to carry on a plane, the TSA will soon allow pocket knives back on board.

The Transportation Security Administration says airline passengers will soon be allowed to carry on small pocket knives, as long as they are 2.36 inches in length and no more than a half inch wide.

Some sporting equipment will also be allowed on board, including golf clubs, hockey sticks, pool cues and baseball bats.

The TSA says by allowing these items on board, it will allow them to focus on the more high-risk items, like guns and explosives.

But flight attendants are concerned their plans will compromise security and travelers we spoke to had mixed reactions.

One person said, "People are creative nowadays. They can do the same things with the pocket knives that they could do with a pen or a pencil or anything else that they want to bring on, so it's not that big of a deal."

"I could get a whole lot of people a lot faster with this stuff than a bottle of whatever. I’m not scared of someone that's holding a bottle. I am going to be scared of somebody wielding a knife. No matter what size it is," said another.

The new rules for the TSA will go into effect April 25th.
