OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- Two nuclear plants in Oswego County are under closer watch by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission after too many unplanned shutdowns.
Planned shutdowns are initiated when plants want to do scheduled maintenance, such as during a refueling outage. In this case, both Nine Mile Unit One and FitzPatrick exceed the amount of unplanned shutdowns you can have in one quarter.
That means NRC inspectors will conduct an additional inspection at each plant and will sit down with staff to discuss the incidents.
There are currently 18 other reactors nationwide that also fall into this category.
