HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. – There’s some good news for the Mohawk Valley. Congressman Richard Hanna has announced that Remington Arms has been awarded a new $80 million contract to make rifles for the military. The work will be done by employees at Remington's plant in Ilion.

Under the 10 year contract, Remington will make more than 5,000 rifles. The Remington Modular Sniper Rifle is accurate up to 1,500 meters.

The contract is good news for a company that employs 1,300 people and is currently dealing with a lot of uncertainty because of new control laws in New York. Local lawmakers, including Hanna and state Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, have spent a lot of time at Remington Arms in recent months in an effort to keep Remington in Ilion.

It has been rumored that Remington is considering leaving New York for a more gun friendly location and several states have sent letters to the company trying to convince them to move.
