SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It's that time of year again to recognize local musical artists for their talent and dedication to the industry.

Hundreds of people filled the Palace Theatre for the 2013 Syracuse Area Music Awards Friday evening.

The first ever SAMMYS were held in 1994, and has grown into one of the greatest local music events in the Central New York area.

It's a memorable night for those who are new to the scene and those who've been around it their whole lives.

"It shows people that they are appreciated for the talent that they have, and the work that they do, and the enjoyment that they give to a lot of people that attend concerts and see them in various musical locals. It gives them a boost to their ego, and makes them work a little harder in what they do," said Bill Knowlton, SAMMYS hall of famer.

This year's coveted Lifetime Achievement Award was given to the late Syracuse native and composer, Jimmy Van Heusen.
