ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A proposal to merge the Lysander and Baldwinsville Fire Districts took another step forward Monday night, as board members in the Town of Lysander unanimously approved the plan.
Talks have been ongoing for more than a year, when firefighters came together to have a study conducted to see if consolidation would help improve fire protection throughout both towns. The plan that was drawn up eliminates the current Smoky Hollow and Northern Fire Protection Districts and extends the Lysander district, which would be called the North West Fire District. Homeowners would see a slight change in tax rate, which fluctuates depending on where they live.
The Town of Van Buren still has to give its approval. If that happens, the changes would take effect next year.
