SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A firefighter was injured after flames broke out inside a large garage and storage area on North Midler Avenue in Syracuse.

Investigators say a man was working on a vehicle Tuesday evening when the fire erupted. Several cars were destroyed.

The building was several hundred feet from fire hydrants, which made it difficult to put out.

"Fires like that are labor intensive. Somebody has to stretch all the hose. Somebody has to walk it. Somebody has to pick it up. It's just a lot of work. Each length of hose is about 100 pounds without water in it. So it's a lot of work," said Syracuse Deputy Fire Chief Steve Cavuto.

The injured firefighter was hurt by a piece of jagged metal, but is expected to be okay.

Investigators are looking into a cause.
