ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Onondaga County Sheriff's department warns that crooks have been targeting cars at fitness centers. Investigators have been looking into a rash of car break-ins.

According to deputies, items have been reported missing at Gold's Gym and Planet Fitness in DeWitt, as well as Liverpool's Gold's Gym and the Liverpool YMCA.

Investigators said other locations throughout the county have also been targeted by crooks. Suspects have been looking for GPS devices, electronics and purses left in unlocked cars.

Deputies have some advice for people going to the gym:

  • GPS units and electronics should be placed out of sight

  • Wallets and purses should be locked in the trunk

  • Drivers should park in busy, well-lit areas

  • Remember to lock your doors when leaving the vehicle
