ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Police have a suspect in custody in connection with a murder and rape that happened Thursday night outside of a mall in Syracuse suburbs.

State Police said David Renz, 29, attacked a woman and child who were leaving gymnastics class.

Renz allegedly bound the woman and raped the child inside a vehicle and then drove the car a short way where the child was able to flee.

The child was found by a passing motorist and is currently being treated at the hospital for her injuries.

The woman, Lori Bresnahan, 47, suffered multiple stab wounds and later died at a local hospital.

State Police captured Renz a short distance from the scene.

He was charged with first and second degree murder, rape, and kidnapping.
