FREMONT, N.Y. -- One person is dead following a two-car crash on Interstate 86 in the Town of Fremont. The Steuben County Sheriff's Office says Raymond Thompson, 79, of Illinois was towing a U-Haul trailer.

Investigators say after passing a vehicle he tried to change lanes and ended up hitting another car. Thompson's trailer jackknifed and his vehicle overturned on the shoulder of the road. He had to be removed from the vehicle and was transported to the hospital.

His passenger, Sharon Thompson, 69, was trapped beneath the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say the crash was caused by the slippery roads and operator error.
