STATEWIDE -- Those long lines at the DMV could become a thing of the past. The Cuomo administration is planning to launch a pilot program to extend hours at certain DMV offices in an effort to reduce congestion.

The pilot program calls for a few select DMV offices to stay open later in the evening and on Saturdays.

If the program proves to be successful, it would be expanded to other offices.

The move is included in the tentative budget, calling for an amendment to the state's Vehicle and Traffic Law.

Other changes include implementing self-serve kiosks for transactions and allowing people to use smart phones to reserve a place in line before heading to the DMV office.
