Capital Play brings bid to Spa City
As the companies bidding for franchise rights to New York's biggest tracks continue to wait for Governor Spitzer's decision on who gets the rights, Australian conglomerate Capital Play took their proposal to the residents of Saratoga.
It's a bid that guarantees $1.8 billion for the rights to operate Belmont Park, Aqueduct and Saratoga Race Course. In the plans are ways to bring more people through the turnstiles at Belmont Park, and a vision to transform Aqueduct into a world class destination with a 5-star hotel and shops.
As for Saratoga, the company says there's little it would do differently.

"We value the traditions of Saratoga. We will make sure that Saratoga...we are custodians for the next 20 years. We're here for future generations. We want to hand it off. People come because it's a historic track, it's a social experience. You don't change something that is working as well as it is here," said President and CEO of Capital Play, Inc. Karl O'Farrell.
Some Saratoga residents expressed concern about changes the company would make to the track. O'Farrell said he would seek the city's approval before making any improvements or changes.
But one thing he does want to do is improve conditions for backstretch workers.
