A new state law is in effect that requires all homes in New York State to install carbon monoxide detectors.

"Amanda's Law" is named after Amanda Hansen, a 16-year-old from West Seneca, who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while sleeping at a friend's house in January 2009.

"I think it's been neglected for a long time that people since you can't really notice it, carbon monoxide is something that could get you without you realizing it, and that's what's happened in the past," said Bob Dykes, a Rochester landlord who rents several units to college students.

Your water heater, your furnace, wood or pellet burning stove, carbon monoxide is produced when you burn any type of fuel.

The law recommends that CO alarms be installed in a central location outside each bedroom and on every level of your house. The detectors can be found at any home improvement or hardware store. They are fairly cheap and easy to install.

"Most certainly there is a big move towards getting the carbon monoxide alarms into the homes and into commercial structures," said Bill Read, operations manager at the Lowe's store in Henrietta.
