Another safety lapse at Boston airport

By: The Associated Press

Just as a passenger jet was about to take off in Boston, a cargo jet came taxiing across the runway.

Authorities said a mechanic in a FedEx cargo jet crossed a runway at Logan International Airport as a Florida-bound JetBlue plane with 130 people on board was about to take off from that runway.

The FedEx plane did not have clearance to be on the runway.

Luckily, the JetBlue craft had not yet begun rolling. Air traffic controllers spotted the FedEx plane and told the JetBlue crew to hold off.

Monday's incident was the fourth such safety lapse at Logan in the past two months. The worst came on June 9, when a U.S. Airways Jet traveling at 167 miles per hour came within 171 feet of the intersection where an Aer Lingus plane was taking off at 198 miles per hour.
