ITHACA, N.Y. -- Teachers were given a chance to sit back and let someone else do the work at a Winter Recess Reception.
"Ithaca is really an education-based town, and I think it's really a chance to give back to the teachers,” said Christi Boothe, Satori Day Spa Co-owner.
Satori Day Spa spoiled guests with a variety of beauty treatments Monday night, and restaurants donated food and drinks.
"This is just great fun. It's a nice way to unwind. It gives you a chance to talk to some of the teachers you don't ordinarily see,” said Gwen Freeman, Ithaca High School Administrator.
Now more than ever, teachers need a chance to unwind. They say with the pressures of budget cuts and standardized testing, their stress levels are on the rise.
"I just feel exhausted. I just get to the point where it's been a long week and a long day. It's constant. It's just not an easy thing to do,” said Brittany Baker, Special Education Teacher.
"If you're really trying to do your best and be a decent teacher, yes, it's going to be stressful,” said Gwen Freeman, Ithaca High School Administrator.
An educator for 35 years, Freeman has seen the pressure rise.
"They're doing a lot of testing. They're expecting teachers to make sure students produce, produce, produce. So it is harder, I think, in some ways,” said Freeman.
So what does the salon recommend to ease the tension?
"Two friends, a glass of wine and a pedicure,” said Boothe.
Boothe says it's the perfect treatment for the often overworked and under-appreciated school teachers.
