ENGLAND -- A new report says Britain was influential in the release of the Lockerbie bomber.

The official report cites that Britain's previous Labour Party government did all it could to secure the release of Abdel Baset al-Megrahi. But the report did not find any evidence to prove the government pressured Scottish officials to free the man.

Al-Megrahi was convicted in the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 that killed 270 people, including 35 Syracuse University students in 1988. He was freed from a Scottish prison in August 2009 because he was considered terminally ill. He is still alive.

The British government denies the allegations, saying that al-Megrahi's release was the sole decision of Scotland's regional government.
