ITHACA, N.Y. - After winning the National Wrestling Coaches Association duals meet last season, Cornell is looking to do the same in a new format as the NWCA tries to increase the prestige of the event.
This year's tournament is an invitational based on last year's final NWCA rankings, with four regional sites hosting three rounds followed by a final four at a neutral site. The hope is to get enough interest to make it an event based on current rankings at a cutoff point each season and have it be as important as the season-ending national individual championships.
Cornell is the host team and top seed for its region and will be one of six teams in action Sunday. The schedule is as follows:
10 a.m. – No. 4 Central Michigan vs. No. 5 Purdue (Mat One)
10 a.m. – No. 3 Oklahoma vs. No. 6 American (Mat Two)
12 p.m. – No. 1 Cornell vs. Central Michigan/Purdue (Mat One)
12 p.m. – No. 2 Illinois vs. Oklahoma/American (Mat Two)
12 p.m. – Fifth Place Match (Mat Three)
2 p.m. – Finals (Mat One)
