GERMAN FLATTS, N.Y. -- Firefighters in Herkimer County spent several hours battling a large brush fire in the Town of German Flatts.
The fire was called in just before 3 p.m. Thursday, and included three fields off of Miller Road, an estimated 100 acres.
Firefighters say the mild weather means the ground is uncommonly dry for this time of year, and dry, dead grass in the field helped fuel the fire.
Miller Road is a seasonal road, and the fire was down a hill, causing several challenges for crews.
"It's not like some flat area. It's a hilly area, course spring time, so it's muddy. So the four wheelers are getting our man power to and from the scene. They're using portable tanks to carry the water on," said Mohawk Fire Department Deputy Chief Kenneth Palmer.
No word yet on what caused the fire. No one was injured.
