CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. --The Fort Drum soldier who escaped military custody and led police on a three day manhunt in September has made another attempt at escape.

At his sentencing in Cortland County Court Thursday, Russell Marcum apologized for his original crimes.

He was sentenced to one to three years in prison for burglary and unlawfully fleeing a police officer.

On his way back to the Elmira Correctional facility, Marcum again tried to flee.

Corrections authorities say Marcum freed himself of some of his restraints during trip from Cortland.

When officers opened the rear door of the vehicle at the entrance to the facility around 4:45 p.m., Marcum ran.

He got about a hundred yards away before corrections officers captured him.

Marcum is now in the facility's disciplinary housing unit where he will remain while state police and the corrections department investigate the incident.

He also faces charges in several other counties for his crimes.
