SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The streak had to end sometime, and sometime turned out to be Sunday as the No. 9 Syracuse men's lacrosse team suffered its first Big East loss in the three-year history of conference play with an 11-10 defeat to No. 14 Villanova.
The Orange (4-3, 2-1 Big East) led 7-5 at halftime but the Wildcats (5-3, 1-0) pulled ahead 11-9 in the fourth and held on thanks to 12 saves from goalie Dan Gutierrez including a final stop with 25 seconds remaining to seal the final score.
Syracuse next plays No. 10 Duke Sunday at MetLife Stadium as part of the Big City Classic.
