ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The speed limit will be reduced on a stretch of road in the Town of Cicero that many people say is dangerous.

At a public hearing, Town of Cicero board members voted to change the speed limit from 50 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour on East Taft Road from Thompson Road to Northern Boulevard. This following what residents say are too many accidents on the roadway.

Most recently was a rear-end collision that killed FedEx employee Leanne Schaefer.

During the public comment period, Schaefer's boss expressed his concerns about the busy intersection and pointed out that Schaefer was not the first employee to be injured there. He commended the board's decision, but says more needs to be done to ensure safety.

"Doing kind of the trifecta. A light, reducing the speed limit and a turn signal. Otherwise, I think unless you do all three, you'll have some incidents moving forward, so I think you have to go full force," said Cameron Orchard, FedEx Senior Manager.

The Cicero police chief says reducing the speed limit could reduce the impact of future crashes, possibly saving a life.

Board members say the Department of Transportation is considering putting a stop light and turning signal at Totman Road, where Schaefer's accident happened.
