SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse University hosted the "Conference on Engaging Community Support for Veterans" to help veterans in Central New York. It happened Friday morning at the OnCenter, hosted by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families and Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle.
Three speakers thanked veterans for their service for the country and spoke about topics such as health and wellness, employment and education for veterans.
Among the panelists was Florida Congressman Jeff Miller, who is the chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee. He said one of the biggest issues facing the VA is keeping up with the number of veterans who recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan.
"We've got some veterans that are waiting years for their disability claims to be adjudicated, and there has to be a better system. It can't be done the way it has for years and years and years. Somebody has to think outside of the box," said Congressman Miller.
