As law enforcement has been sifting through a SoHo basement, businesses in that Manhattan neighborhood have been affected. Our Courtney Gross has the story.

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. -- The investigation into the disappearance of Etan Patz has crippled a family for more than 30 years. And for the past few days it’s also taking its toll on some of the premiere stores of SoHo. Like camper.

Kevin Aranzales, Camper Supervisor said, “Traffic is almost nonexistent. Most people that come by just want to stand by and take pictures. So it’s definitely hurt our numbers. The whole week we haven't been able to hit budget. It’s very tragic for the family but it’s definitely affecting business. Not just us but pretty much everybody in the area."

Since Thursday, the NYPD and FBI have been excavating a basement on this Prince Street block. The former work space of Othneil Miller, who was a handyman in the area the last time Etan Patz was seen in 1979.

They have blocked off this block. Leaving SoHo shoppers looking elsewhere for their designer wears. While business is down as much as twenty percent for these high end stores, some realize the price they pay doesn't compare to what the Patzs' have.

Peter Mugavero, Cole Haan Manager said, “The parents still live in the area and I think it's great they are trying to do something for them. As much as it's not helping our business, I have no problems with it."

Officials estimate about eight businesses have had to shutter their doors here on Prince Street because of the investigation. And while most in the surrounding area have lost business, a few are in the black. Like this coffee and sandwich shop.

Angel Rodriquez, Olive's Manager said, “Business went up a bit. Agents, NYPD, and tourists all seeing what's happening. So it's been good for us unfortunately."

The investigation is expected to pick up again on Monday. So these businesses will likely see more of the FBI than trend setters.
