ADAMS, N.Y. -- Adams, also known as the Arbor Day Village, celebrated the holiday this weekend with festivities at South Jefferson High School. There were plenty of activities for families to learn about their environment, including wild birds and a tree planting station.

Kids got their hands dirty planting hearty trees to take home with the help of the Department of Environmental Conservation. They say these types of hands on activities are key to teaching kids about our environment.

Department of Environmental Conservation Forester Glen Roberts said, "It is very important to pass along the knowledge, and sometimes we don't know what kids are going to pick up. They absorb a lot, so that's why I'm explaining everything I can. Because I realize now they pick up a lot of information when you tell it to them."

Adults also could take part in some information sessions, as well on tree planting tips and pruning instructions.
