OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Years of hard work have finally come to fruition, as the town of Oswego unveils a statue honoring Dr. Mary Walker.

Walker was one of the town's most famous residents. She was a prisoner of war in the Civil War, and went on to become a well-known women's rights advocate.

Dr. Walker is also the only woman ever to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Town leaders have spent years working on the creation of this memorial and they hope it will serve not only as a tribute, but as a lesson worth learning.

Theresa Cooper, Treasurer of Oswego Town Historical Society said, “Now that the statue is here, we're hoping the community who doesn't know about her will come out and see this work of art and take notice of who Dr. Mary Walker was."

Three of Dr. Walker's relatives came from different parts of the country to take part in the celebration and unveiling. The statue was sculpted by Sharon BuMann.
