If you’re looking to buy or sell a house, you may be looking for a real estate agent. In this week’s edition of Your Home, Ryan Peterson tells us the right questions to ask when looking for the perfect fit.

If you're in the market to purchase a home, your first order of business should be getting pre-qualified for a mortgage. Next, it's a good idea to seek out a reputable real estate agent. How do you find one that's right for you? We asked our resident experts for their advice.

Beth Grzyboski, a Real Estate Sales Associate said, “We're a referral based business. I think what you have to do is your homework and you have to ask people that you know."

Kevin Clancy, a Real Estate Broker said, “It's like hiring any professional like a CPA or contractor. Interview three or four or five and go with the one you feel most comfortable with."

When you do interview prospective agents, there are some key questions to ask.

Scott Varley, a Real Estate Broker said, “Ask how many transactions they do a year in terms of representing a buyer and how many they do a year representing a seller, because it's two different tasks. You're also going to want to know what they do electronically."

Agencies will often take the extra step of matching potential buyers with agents who are most familiar with the neighborhood you're interested in.

Willie Miranda, a Real Estate Broker said, “We always try to match up that buyer with an agent who knows the area best. There are a lot of different neighborhoods, a lot of different school districts, and a lot of different pocket areas that are very important that the agents knows what they're walking into and recommending to their buyers."

And if you find that things aren't quite working out, don't feel bad about making a change.

Grzyboski said, “They are going to want to develop a relationship with an agent to make sure that agent is that right person for them. If he or she isn't they have the right to leave agent and go an find someone else. It's courtesy to let the agent know why, but they aren't obligated to do so."

Remember, as I've said numerous times here on this segment, a home is the single, largest investment you'll likely ever make. Make sure you trust the person who will be guiding you through the process.
