A four-year-old was left on a hot bus in the Chenango Valley school garage earlier this week. Now the two employees responsible are facing charges. Our Melissa Kakareka spoke with school officials about the situation.

BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Officials in the Chenango Valley School District are investigating how a four-year-old pre-school student was left in a parked school bus earlier this week.

"Here procedurally, we do have the appropriate procedures, so investigation will obviously figure out what happened, but this isn't typical of district procedures and our transportation," said Superintendent David Gill.

The Broome County Sherriff's office says the student fell asleep on the bus and was left in a parking garage for an hour. Both the bus driver and the monitor are charged with endangering the welfare of a child for what authorities say was a failure to follow a state regulation that requires them to check the vehicle at the conclusion of each bus route.

Police decided to charge the two because in this situation, the child's health was affected due to heat.

"In any decision making process, you take the totality of the situation into account. This child had a slightly elevated temperature and was left for a period of time," said Broome County Sheriff’s Office Captain Frederick Akshar.

The school district says both employees are no longer performing their regular duties at this time. Further discussion of the incident will likely come up at the Board of Education meeting on June 20.

"From a district perspective, kids are our main priority and main issue, so their safety and well being is obviously the most important thing to us," said Gill.

Both the driver and the monitor are scheduled to appear in the Town of Fenton Court at a later date.
